What does my child need in order to enroll in the Behind the Wheel
instruction course?
Students need to have completed the classroom portion of driver’s education, driven
at least twenty hours with thier parents and hold a Virginia Permit.
( Parents can sign up children for private lessons)

When does the 45 hour driver's log need to be completed?
Students can enroll in Behind the Wheel if their 45 hour driver's log is not complete
but they will not be issued a license until they have completed the log.

How long is the Behind the Wheel course?
Students are required by the state of Virginia to receive fourteen 50 minute driving
sessions.  Seven are spent driving and seven are spent observing.  Students typically
accomplish this over a two week period. They sign up for seven lessons each one
lasting one hour and forty minutes.  

Do you give my child his/her road skills test?
Yes, all teenagers 18 years old and younger are required to take the Behind the
Wheel course which includes the road skills test on the last day of the lessons.

If my child passes do you automatically issue him/her a license?
Yes, if your child has met all the requirements below then we will issue a Provisional
Drivers License (PDL -see next question).
Requirements for teenager:
  • Pass Road Skills Test.
  • Held Learner's Permit for a minimum of nine months.
  • Completed the forty hour driver's log.*(if under age 18)
  • Parent Permission.*(if under age 18)
What is provisional drivers license (PDL)
A provisional driver’s license is a valid Virginia license as long as it is carried with a
learner's permit.  This is a temporary license for your child to use until he/she receives
their scheduled appointment to attend a juvenile licensing ceremony in the county in
which the student resides.
